Regarding settling the mind for a practitioner of faith: if one wishes to hear about quiescent concentration, which like Mount Sumeru does not fear the eight movements, one should listen to calming. If one wishes to hear about sharp contemplation to break through all afflictions like the sun dispelling darkness, one should listen to contemplation. If one listens much to contemplation, it is like the sun scorching sprouts; one should immediately listen to calming, moistening them with the water of concentration. Or if one has been soaked in listening to concentration for long, like sprouts rotting and not growing, one should immediately listen to contemplation, letting wind and sun stir them into action so that good dharmas appear before one. Or when sensations race about and not a single thought-moment can abide, one should immediately listen to calming to remedy the distracted mind. Or if one sinks into dullness, enveloped as if sitting in mist, one should immediately listen to contemplation to break this heavy sleep. Or if through listening to calming one becomes open and clear, one should focus exclusively on listening to calming; or if through hearing contemplation one becomes bright and clear, one should focus exclusively on listening to contemplation. This is the eightfold skillful settling of the mind in self-cultivation for a practitioner of faith.
