One kind of meditation master does not permit practicing contemplation and exclusively employs calming, quoting a verse: 'Thinking, thinking is in vain to think to oneself; / Thinking, thinking is in vain to suffer oneself. / Ceasing thought is precisely the path; / As long as there is thought, one will never see.' Another meditation master does not permit practicing calming and focuses exclusively on contemplation, quoting a verse: 'Calming, calming is in vain to calm oneself; / Dull and dark without cause. / Calming, calming is not the path; / Contemplating, contemplating one comes to accord with the principle.' Each of the two masters entered through a single gate and teaches others based on their own benefit. Students do not see the intent; exclusively consuming milk, they can hardly obtain buttermilk, let alone clarified butter.
