One should know that these two dharmas are definite; they cannot be changed by verbal explanations or conceptual distinctions. The original dharma is suchness as principle; the dharma of oneself is the realization of the real. This meaning is identical in intent to the four ineffables in the Great Scripture (Mahāparinirvāṇa-sūtra). 'Production-production is ineffable' refers to the original dharma being ineffable; production accords with conditioned arising, while the original dharma is ineffable. 'Production-nonproduction is ineffable' refers to the ineffability of the dharma of one's own eradication. 'Nonproduction-production is ineffable' refers to the ineffability of the dharma of one's own wisdom. 'Nonproduction-nonproduction is ineffable' refers to the ineffability of the dharma of one's own ultimate self-realization. Of the latter two phrases, one concludes that production is ineffable, which concludes the ineffability of the original dharma; the other concludes that nonproduction is ineffable, which concludes the ineffability of the dharma of one's own realization.
