If sentient beings are established, all the causes and fruits of the dharmas of delusion are established, and all who are to be transformed are established. If faculties and teachings are established, all the causes and fruits of understanding and practice are established, and all who can transform are established. This is how, in the gate of nonproduction, when one is established, all are established. Therefore the Pañcaviṃśati says: 'If one hears the gate of the syllable A, one understands all meanings.' The Scripture of the Buddha Treasury says: 'With a single blow, all is fully accomplished.' This is what it means. It is like the four maturities in the Bodhisattvabhūmi (*Bodhisattvadhāraka-śāstra): the śrāvaka gotra, the pratyekabuddha gotra, the buddha gotra, and the bodhisattva gotra; lacking these four natures, they are matured through the good destinies. The buddha gotra is this perfect faculty, and the bodhisattva gotra is this distinctive faculty. That text says: 'As for the bodhisattva seed, whether there is a buddha or no buddha, it is capable of sequentially cutting off the affliction-obstruction and the knowledge-obstruction.' How could this not be the distinctive faculty? The śrāvaka gotra should be unpacked: those with separate and different good roots are the Tripiṭaka faculties; the gotra of those who regress from the Mahāyāna to take up the Hīnayāna is the shared faculty. Those four maturities are precisely the meaning of these four faculties and conditions.
