If the subsequent thought arises when the prior thought has both ceased and not ceased: if it has ceased, it already belongs to cessation; if it has not ceased, it already belongs to non-cessation. If non-cessation combined with cessation can produce [the thought], this is arising from both. Arising from both is internally contradictory; how can contradictory things produce anything? Furthermore, if each individually possesses arising, there are two faults; if each individually lacks arising, their union also does not produce it. If there is a nature of arising within both cessation and non-cessation, does it exist or does it not exist? If the nature definitely exists, how could it be cessation and non-cessation? If the nature definitely does not exist, how could it also be cessation and non-cessation? This does not avoid the faults of annihilation and permanence, and falls back into the fault of arising from both.
