When a disciple of the Buddha contemplates non-arising, if a mind of emptiness arises, at the very moment the mind of emptiness arises they immediately recognize it as craving. Why? Arising is called a dharmic factor of craving, and a dharmic factor of craving is avidyā; avidyā gives rise to the eighty-eight proclivities such as the view of self, each of which possesses the delusions of the three provisionalities, and so they never cling to it, claiming it is true non-arising. What are the three provisionalities? Because previously the three provisionalities of the view of existence were subdued, one passes over into the view of non-existence. When the mental object of non-arising faces the mind-sense, a single thought-moment of a mind of emptiness arises: this is the provisionality of conditioned arising. Because the mind of arising has ceased, the mind of non-arising arises: this is the provisionality of continuity. The sudden non-arising relies upon the existence of arising: this is the provisionality of relativity.
