In the present age, there are many demonic monks who renounce their precepts and return home, and fearing forced labor, go further to cross over to become Daoist masters. Seeking fame and profit, they boastfully talk of Zhuangzi and Laozi, stealing the teachings of the Buddhadharma to install them within heterodox scriptures, pressing down the high to conform to the low, dragging the revered into the base, leveling them indiscriminately. Using "The Dao that can be spoken of is not the constant Dao; the name that can be named is not the constant name," they equate it with the Buddhadharma's ineffability and unshowability; this is like a worm gnawing wood that happens by chance to form characters. When the principles are examined, the heterodox and the orthodox are as far apart as heaven and earth; fools believe it, while the wise scoff at it. Why is this? As explained earlier, regarding all arising, all non-arising, all four propositions, and all ineffables, you are not even beyond the simple four propositions of the ineffable, so how could you be beyond the compound? How could you be beyond the complete? How could you even equal the Vātsīputrīyas? If you do not even equal the Vātsīputrīyas, how could you compare to the Tripiṭaka, shared, distinctive, and perfect [teachings]? When the principles and origins of all dharmas are compared to the "constant name" and "constant Dao", how could they ever be equal? When the characteristics of the teachings are compared, they already cannot be equal, not to mention when examined against suffering and the origin of suffering, where their faults and hazards are laid bare—how could they be equal? How much less so when compared against the branches of the path—how could they ever equal the essentials of the true Dharma?
