Furthermore, when the Tathāgata walked, Śakra was on his right, Brahmā was on his left, Vajra led the way before him, the fourfold assembly followed behind, and he traveled through the sky. Laozi himself drove a thin-boarded green ox cart, heading west of the pass to farm; Zhuangzi was employed by others, guarding lacquer trees. In such actions, how could they again be equal? The Tathāgata was destined to be a wheel-turning sage king, looked up to by all within the four seas; awaiting the arrival of the divine treasures, he suddenly abandoned this glorious rank, left home, and attained Buddhahood. Laozi served east of the pass, begrudging a petty official post, and farmed west of the pass, prizing a few acres of fields; busy with public and private matters, he could not relinquish these—how can they be said to be equal?
