Answer: One should distinguish them with four propositions: 1. Old delusions are not eliminated, and new delusions arise again; 2. Old delusions are eliminated, but new delusions arise again; 3. Old delusions are not eliminated, yet new delusions do not arise; 4. Old delusions are eliminated, and new delusions do not arise. 1. It is like taking medicine: the old disease is not cured, and the medicine further turns into a disease; 2. The treated disease is cured, but the medicine creates a disease; 3. Although the disease is not cured, the medicine causes no hindrance; 4. The old disease having been cured, the medicine also ceases accordingly. The first two are the marks of advantage and disadvantage of tīrthikas; the latter two are the marks of advantage and disadvantage of disciples of the Buddha.
