At the beginning of the three vehicles, practitioners are not foolish regarding the Dharma and all wish to seek Buddhahood; yet abhorring birth and death, they often fall back. For example, if several people all hear that there is a seven-jeweled mountain in another region, they set their hearts on it and pack their gear; yet if they consider the hardship and danger of the road, they fall back and do not advance. Practitioners are also like this: fearing birth and death, they fall back from the great and sink into emptiness. Later, upon hearing of the superior and wondrous merits of bodhisattvas, they reflect that they are rotten seeds and weep, shaking the trichiliocosm, harboring sorrow and regret without awaiting its cause. If one follows this view, there would only be entry into emptiness, and no such thing as entering the provisional.
