3. Clarifying the pervasive destruction of phenomena through the calming and contemplation of the Middle Way: The previous calming and contemplation of arising and non-arising pervasively destroying phenomena initially seemed like one's own practice; next, the calming and contemplation of non-arising and arising pervasively destroying phenomena initially seemed like converting others; now, the calming and contemplation of non-arising and non-arising pervasively destroying phenomena initially seems like double negation of self and other, and also double illumination of self and other. Arising and non-arising is itself non-arising and arising, and is also itself non-arising and non-arising; self is itself not-self, and is also neither self nor not-self. Non-arising and arising is itself arising and non-arising, and is also non-arising and non-arising; other is itself non-other, and is also neither other nor non-other. Non-arising and non-arising is itself non-arising and arising, and is also arising and non-arising; it is also not double negation, and also not double illumination. Various distinctions are made as spoken above merely to make it easy to understand. Under this there are four [topics]: first, the intention of cultivating the contemplation of the middle; second, the conditions for cultivating the contemplation of the middle; third, properly cultivating the contemplation of the middle; fourth, clarifying the benefits of the stages.
