First, as for unconditioned benevolence and compassion, this is the Tathāgata's benevolence and compassion. This benevolence and compassion is of the same substance as true reality; because it does not grasp the mark of sentient beings, it is not [tainted by] affection or views; because it does not grasp the mark of nirvāṇa, it is not [bound to] empty tranquility. Because it is not empty tranquility, it is not benevolence and compassion conditioned by phenomena (dharmālambana); because it is not affection or views, it is not conditioned by sentient beings (sattvālambana). Devoid of the marks of the two extremes, it is therefore called 'unconditioned' (anālambana). The Mahāparinirvāṇa-sūtra says: 'Conditioned by the Tathāgata, it is named unconditioned.' It universally covers the dharmadhātu, eradicates the root of suffering, and bestows ultimate bliss. The benevolence of the previous two contemplations has boundaries and limits; the Tathāgata's benevolence has no limit or measure. The benevolence of the previous two contemplations is shared with bodhisattvas; unconditioned benevolence resides exclusively in the Tathāgata. The previous two benevolences contain nothing; the Tathāgata's benevolence is endowed with all Buddha-dharmas, the ten powers, and the fearlessnesses; it is the tathāgatagarbha, the oceanic summit of all phenomena.
