Fifth, great vigor: wishing to accomplish a great undertaking, one makes great exertion of effort. The Lotus Sūtra says: 'Like one who is courageous and strong, capable of performing difficult tasks.' Only when unmoving and non-retrogressing is one called a 'sattva'. One does not spare body or life, how much less wealth and possessions? Even having attained bodhi, one still does not rest, how much less when one has not yet attained it? The merit of the previous two contemplations is slight and the reward small; the merit of the contemplation of the middle way covers the world, and its reward reaches the unloosing of the topknot jewel. For the sake of great vigor, one cultivates the third contemplation. The causes and conditions for cultivating the middle way are very many; in contrast to the contemplation of emerging into the provisional, five are only briefly explained, and so forth.
