3. Explaining calming and contemplation in terms of horizontal and vertical in a single mind: As explained above, the horizontal and vertical are deep and broad, refuting all erroneous attachments, explicating all sūtras and treatises, cultivating all contemplation practices, adapting to all faculties and conditions, and turning infinitely; the words are cumbersome and difficult to grasp. Now I shall summarize them to bring out the correct meaning. Although the gate of non-arising has tens of millions of layers, it is merely the dharmas produced by causes and conditions in a single thought-moment of avidyā, which are identical to emptiness, identical to the provisional, and identical to the middle—the inconceivable three truths; the three contemplations in a single mind, sarvākārajñatā, the Buddha-eye, and such dharmas. Since the gate of non-arising is like this, all the other horizontal gates are also like this. Though spoken of in various ways, they are merely the three contemplations in a single mind; therefore there is neither horizontal nor vertical. Simply cultivating calming and contemplation in a single mind also has two parts: first, explaining the single mind generally; second, applying it through other single minds.
