Answer: The Hinayana guides the dull, giving them respite according to the grades, and therefore does not leap over. Śāriputra had great wisdom and was to be the general who turns the wheel of Dharma, distinguishing the grades, and therefore for seven days, or as some say fifteen days, did not leap over. Ānanda, because he served as the attendant, did not leap over; it was not that he lacked the power of wisdom. The bodhisattva of the shared teaching has sharp wisdom, and the two vehicles should also have those who leap; but because they shoulder sentient beings and act as guides, extensively needing to make distinctions, leaping is not discussed. The two teachings, distinctive and perfect, are also like this. Although there are leaping and non-leaping, ultimately breaking through the provisionality of thought [delusion] is universal.
