That these four gates are all called "attaining the path at the stream" is because the stream is the first fruit. Superior ones further receive distinct names, leading to the distinctions among the three gates, yet all can generally be considered the stream. The existence gate is the impermanence stream; the non-existence gate is the stream of equal emptiness; the gate of both existence and non-existence is the harmonious stream; the gate of neither existence nor non-existence is the stream of double negation. The streams are all the first fruit of the four gates. While the contemplations of the four gates differ, seeing the true truth is identical. Just as a city has four gates, when they converge there is no difference. Therefore the *Mahāsaṃnipāta* says: "People holding the view of permanence say that cessation occurs in different thought-moments; people holding the view of annihilation say that cessation occurs in a single thought-moment. Although the two persons differ, in terms of their attainment of the path there is no distinction whatsoever."
