It is merely that ordinary sentiments are dull and obscured; without explanation they do not understand. First one entices and opens them up, and later they enter the correct path. The Lotus [Sūtra] says: 'Although various paths are spoken of, in truth they are for the One Vehicle.' If one grasps this meaning, though making distinctions all day, there is nothing distinguished. The Nirvāṇa [Sūtra] calls it: 'There is yet another practice, which is the practice of the Tathāgata.' The Lotus [Sūtra] calls it: 'Honestly discarding expedients, only expounding the unsurpassed path.' The Large [Prajñāpāramitā] calls it: 'Sarvākārajñatā knows all dharmas.' The Vimalakīrti calls it: 'Entering the campaka grove, one does not smell other scents.' The Avataṃsaka calls it 'the dharmadhātu.' Such is the intention of these four gates.
