These five intentions are the same as in the Vimalakīrti Sūtra. That text contains three kinds of consolations: first, clarifying the contemplation of the body as impermanent, etc., is consolation for entering emptiness; at the very end it says, 'One should act as a king of medicine,' which is consolation for entering the middle; in between is consolation for entering the provisional. There are thus five points: pitying the illnesses of others with one's own illness is great compassion of shared identity. Recognizing the suffering of countless kalpas in past lives—how is that not the original vow? Mindfully considering how to benefit all sentient beings—how is that not knowing the fault of emptiness? Remembering the merits one has cultivated and being mindful of pure livelihood is skillful expedients. Not giving rise to grief and distress, and constantly arousing vigor, is the fifth point. This meaning coincides profoundly with that text, and so forth.
