It is like a small calf of an elephant: although attempting to shield against swords and arrows, it will certainly be struck, bringing no benefit to self or others. When a bodhisattva of initial aspiration wishes to enter birth and death, when touched by birth and death, their roots of goodness regress and are lost, and the dharmakāya is damaged; nevertheless, their generating of the mind of great compassion has commendable merit. Therefore, although the bodhisattva fears birth and death, they constantly seek the roots of goodness and shoulder sentient beings, not like the two vehicles; although dwelling in birth and death, it is not out of craving for the five desires, but solely to bring universal deliverance, not like ordinary people. A sūtra says: 'Not abiding in taming, not abiding in non-taming; though knowing non-self, teaching people untiringly; though knowing nirvāṇa, not entering eternal cessation; though knowing impurity, not speaking of revulsion.' This is precisely this meaning.
