Rejoicing in others' merit means 'celebrating them.' Since the Buddha has turned the wheel of Dharma three times, sentient beings obtain benefits throughout the three times; I assist in their joy. Furthermore, I ought to exhort and transform them to make them generate goodness; when their goodness arises naturally, I therefore rejoice. Rejoicing in the wholesome merit of sentient beings of the three times, the undefiled goodness of the three vehicles of the three times, and all the goodness of the buddhas of the three times from their initial thought of awakening until their parinirvāṇa, I rejoice in all of them and also teach others to rejoice. It is like a seller, a buyer, and a bystander of incense, where all three are perfumed alike; the transformer, the transformed, and the one who rejoices share the three goodnesses equally. Contemplating the delusions of sentient beings is deeply pitiable; contemplating the goodness of sentient beings warrants great reverence, with a mind that constantly never despises. Deeply knowing that sentient beings possess the inherent cause, conditioning cause, and revealing cause [of buddha-nature]—even if these have not yet manifested, they must inevitably arise. Like the poison-smeared drum, whether heard from near or far, death is certain; therefore one reveres them like buddhas. Why? The future World-Honoured Ones are limitless in number. This is the profound meaning of rejoicing. The Lotus Sūtra rejoices in Dharma; the Pañcaviṃśatisāhasrikā Prajñāpāramitā rejoices in persons; persons and Dharma are interchangeably raised.
