If fame, profit, and retinue attack from without, remember these three methods and endure with clenched teeth. Though requested thousands or tens of thousands of times, be firmly unyielding: decline! hide! depart! If defilements, karma, dhyāna, views, and arrogance attack from within, likewise remember the three methods: namely emptiness, namely the provisional, and namely the middle. Even if one's flesh and bones were ground to dust, the mind would not waver or scatter; though the great earth pressed down upon one, one would not be overwhelmed. The vairambha winds are not light, cold ice is not chilly, and fierce flames are not hot. Maintaining a straight mind in correct contemplation, how could one rejoice over a shallow realization or a sliver of dhyāna, or grieve over encountering a slight misfortune? An unbaked vessel is easily crumbled, and the āmrāta flower seldom bears fruit. The Pañcaviṃśatisāhasrikā says: 'Countless people arouse the mind of bodhi, but most fall to the level of the two vehicles.' To accomplish the great matter, patient endurance is all the more necessary. If one understands this meaning, there is no need for the [other] nine realms; if one has not yet fully comprehended, it must be explained further.
