Those who learn dhyāna contemplation are also like this. Knowing only a single method, either calming or contemplation, intending to destroy a little evil, quieting the mind to practice the path, obtaining a little dhyāna concentration, and gathering a small following, they immediately consider it sufficient, just like the common soldier fighting. If one wishes to become a great dhyāna master, destroy great afflictions, reveal immeasurable good dharmas, and benefit immeasurable conditions, one should study the ten methods of calming and contemplation, and thoroughly master their intent and purpose. One applies them in accord with the six conditions and six sensations. When afflictions suddenly arise, contemplation is immediately present; contemplation goes beyond delusions, valiant in difficult undertakings, untying the topknot to obtain the pearl. If one understands but does not apply it, or applies it improperly, and instead takes the deluded mind as master, how can the path ever be accomplished? Furthermore, it is like a rural shaman who knows only a single art, saves only a single person, and receives only a plate of dried meat—what need does he have to study the Divine Farmer's Materia Medica? If one wishes to become a great physician, one must survey all treatments extensively, heal all diseases broadly, check pulses with refined skill, repeatedly apply remedies with verified results, and extend relief far and wide.
