又如學義，止欲一問一答，衒耀一時，何須廣尋經論？欲作法主，當善異部。雖諳解處多而不曾出眾，怯弱不任酬往。若無怯怖，臨機百轉，以無方之答，答縱橫之問，是為大法師。

Furthermore, it is like studying doctrine: if one only wishes to provide a single question and a single answer to show off for a moment, what need is there to search broadly through sūtras and treatises? If one wishes to be a master of the Dharma, one should be skilled in the various schools. Although there are many areas of comprehension, if one has never appeared before the assembly, one will be timid and incapable of handling exchanges. If one is without fear, responding to circumstances with hundreds of turns, answering unrestricted questions with limitless replies, this is a great Dharma master.
