As for desire, it means single-mindedly aspiring toward that dharma; it is also termed 'adorning that dharma'. Contemplative wisdom within concentration is like a lamp in a closed room: illuminating objects, it reveals them clearly. Because of clear illumination, the practice of cessation is accomplished, cultivating the base of spiritual power. As for exertion, it means accomplishing that dharma. The dharmatā is unmoving, yet one strives in quiescence without interruption and without admixture. The practice of cessation is accomplished, cultivating the base of spiritual power. As for mind, it means correctly abiding in observing that dharma, fixing upon it in a single thought-moment. Restraining it in one place, nothing is left unachieved; the practice of cessation is accomplished, cultivating the base of spiritual power. As for scrutiny, it means being skilled in discerning the skillful means of that dharma. Scrutinizing like this, one does not allow it to be agitated or scattered. Because of concentrated scrutiny, the practice of cessation is accomplished, cultivating the base of spiritual power. Being able to cultivate in this way, one enters with a concentrated mind, with no need for other dharmas. If one does not enter, one should cultivate the five faculties (indriya).
