Seventh, the antidotes as auxiliary paths: The Śāstra says: 'The three samādhis serve as the foundation for all samādhis.' If one enters the three samādhis, one can accomplish the four kinds of samādhi. Those of sharp faculties without hindrances easily enter the clear, cool pool and do not need antidotes. Those of sharp faculties with hindrances simply focus on the three gates of liberation; hindrances cannot obstruct them, and they also do not need the auxiliary paths. Those of dull faculties without hindrances simply use the factors of the path for adjustment and can thereby turn the dull into the sharp, also not needing the auxiliary paths. As for those of dull faculties with heavy hindrances: because their faculties are dull, they cannot immediately open the three gates of liberation; because their hindrances are heavy, [the hindrances] drag and break their contemplative mind. For this reason, they must require the path of antidotes to counter and break the hindrances; then they will be able to enter the three gates of liberation in peace and security. The Da zhidu lun calls the various antidotes 'the dharmas that assist in opening the gate'; this is the meaning.
