The various obscurations covering the mind also have thick and thin degrees. In thin cases, the mind moves, while body and speech do not necessarily move; in thick cases, body and speech move, and the mind must have moved first. The internal disease being strong, its signs appear externally. If using an antidote removes it, it suits the disease. If the antidote does not eliminate it, one should rely on the four conformities to turn the auxiliary paths. For example, in curing stinginess: one may delight in cultivating giving, or not delight in cultivating giving; a wholesome mind may arise, or an unwholesome mind may arise; cultivating giving may break stinginess, or not break it; cultivating giving may assist in opening [the gate], or not open it. One should skillfully deliberate and apply the direct, the turning, the combined, or the primary meaning [antidote] (and so forth). Cultivating the other antidotes is likewise so. If one only understands the auxiliary six perfections as a single concrete affair, they cannot assist the path; one should contemplate this assistance as inconceivable, subsuming all dharmas, as will be explained below.
