If one practices as above and fails to awaken, one should reflect: the path-factors of noumenal contemplation each have eight dhyānas, which are subsumed under the pāramitā of dhyāna. One has only intellectual understanding, and has not truly realized them; although one speaks of the fundamental dhyāna, the phenomenal dhyāna is not accomplished; up to, although one speaks of unconditioned dhyāna, the Śūraṅgama is not accomplished. If one lacks dhyāna, one will stumble and fall on flat ground; or, with distraction in both lives, samādhi will not open. For this reason, with a single, resolute mind, throughout the first, middle, and last watches of the night, with body upright and mind serene, if fatigue, distress, or perverse thoughts arise, one immediately extinguishes them. Practicing dhyāna oneself and teaching others, praising the Dharma and praising those who practice it, with an immovable great vow taking the end of life as one's limit, and even into future lives never stopping until realization is attained, one invokes the Buddhas of the ten directions as illumination and salvation. Evoking the Buddha's light of dhyāna, the obstacles of distraction are broken, phenomenal dhyāna unfolds, and one accords with the four contemplations. The Da zhidu lun, in explaining the pāramitā of dhyāna, first lists the various dhyāna dharmas; next explains non-apprehension to reveal the characteristic of pāramitā; and finally explains in detail the nine perceptions, the eight recollections, and so forth, all opening forth from within dhyāna. The dhyāna dharmas are extremely numerous; here we take only five gates to assist the path.
