Attuning the factors of the path: If one contemplates illness as the four great elements, the illness is impure; if the illness is separated from the four great elements, the illness is pure. The illness is neither the four great elements nor separated from the four great elements; the illness is neither pure nor impure. Existent, real, neither existent nor real; empty, provisional, neither empty nor provisional; withered, flourishing, neither withered nor flourishing—such meanings are all identical and without distinction from the mindfulness of the body. In this way, the feeling of the illness is neither painful nor pleasant; the apperception and formations of the illness are neither self nor non-self; the mind of the illness is neither permanent nor impermanent, following the analogies above. The thirty-seven factors of the path are all brought to fulfillment right upon the pillow and mat; understanding suffering as free from suffering, one enters the pool of coolness.
