Now, when the arousal of the mind is correct and genuine and prajñā-understanding is distinct and clear, one skillfully recognizes all marks one by one without error, is not confused by the various hindrances, penetrates the mind directly into reality, and increases in brightness all the more. If, having practiced, one has strength to spare, one distinguishes the gateways of karma; although one is unobstructed and sovereign [therein], this is additionally to transform others. If, in distinguishing the marks of karma, one cannot dissect them finely, yet generally knows them to be hindrances and clings to nothing, but directly strikes into the mind to contemplate reality, then karma cannot obstruct. If originally one lacks an understanding mind and furthermore arouses depraved intentions, and upon seeing these marks generates craving and attachment, māras will find an opening, enter, and display signs of fortune and misfortune; mutually relying on one another, they trade for wealth and food, and upon dying fall into the realm of hungry ghosts—if this is not ghost-dhyāna, what else can it be called? If one wishes to rectify oneself and rectify others, one must grasp its essential meaning. Only when one has personally practiced and verified it, and received oral instructions from a master, may one speak of it publicly. Do not casually peddle it, falsely manufacturing cold and heat—the disaster would be great indeed! I give this deep injunction! I give this deep injunction! May later generations be cautious!
