Fourth, cultivating calming and contemplation consists of ten intentions. What is the conceivable realm of karma? If karma can incur retribution in the three evil destinies, there are superior, middling, and inferior grades; if karma can incur retribution in the three good destinies, there are superior, middling, and inferior grades; immovable karma incurs retributions of form and formlessness. Karmas such as these incur form and mind; in turn, one is deluded about form and mind and gives rise to the four inversions, and birth-and-death continues uninterruptedly precisely because of this. Now, contemplating karma as devoid of karma, inverted delusions do not arise, leading up to the exhaustion of defilements—this is called the 'śrāvaka's contemplation of karma.' If one contemplates karma as arising from avidyā—because of avidyā there is karma, and because of karma there is name-and-form up to old age and death—if one knows avidyā, one does not give rise to grasping or becoming; because avidyā ceases, conditioned factors cease—this is the 'pratyekabuddha's contemplation of karma.' If one contemplates the activities of karma as like an illusion, and what is illusory is empty, and emptiness is nirvāṇa—this is called the 'shared teaching's contemplation of karma.' If one contemplates karma as like the great earth, capable of producing all kinds of sprouts, and all phenomena of the ten dharmadhātus arise from karma—this is called the 'distinctive teaching's contemplation of karma.' All of these are conceivable realms and are not what is used here.
