As for Māra: if one performs the actions of Māra, one is his subject, and therefore he does not disturb one. But if one practices the path to escape the realm, leaving this place and going to that, his ten armies will capture and seize one; therefore, delusions that are deep and sharp suddenly arrive. It is like the water of the great ocean: although there is no wind or current, when a makara swallows water, myriad things rush toward it and cannot be resisted by force; only by mindfully reciting the Buddha's name can one escape. If illustrated by fire: shaking is like habit, fanning by the wind is like karma, and throwing on oil is like Māra. Māra and karma are explained below; contemplating habit-activated defilements is what is contemplated now.
