Remedying māra has three [methods]: First, becoming aware at the outset and scolding it, like a gatekeeper blocking evil from entering. As the Buddha told the monks: 'Do not accept any external objects.' The method of non-acceptance can remedy all māra affairs of self and other. Second, if it has already been received and entered, one should contemplate closely from head to foot, seeking māra without finding it, and seeking the mind without finding it: 'From where did māra come? What does it wish to disturb?' Like an evil person entering a house, one illuminates and inspects everywhere, not letting him remain. Third, if through contemplation it does not leave, strengthen the mind to resist it, taking death as the limit: 'I will not abide together with you.' Skillfully revolving these three remedies—there is no need to speak further.
