Now they are differentiated according to stage so that they are not confused with one another. If dhyāna has not yet arisen, even though one may have worldly knowledge, infer principles, and possess eloquence and cleverness, the thoughts of view are still weak, and all ten proclivities (anuśaya) equally belong to the dull. When views are aroused from relying on concentration, the mind of view is fierce and flourishing; all ten proclivities take their name from what is predominant, and all belong to the sharp. It is like two scholars: one grasps the meaning of the Dharma and is strong in debate; the other grasps only the words and is weak in debate. Grasping the words is like lacking dhyāna; grasping the meaning is like arousing concentration.
