Second, lack of moderation in food and drink can also cause illness. For instance, pungent things like ginger and cinnamon increase fire; sweet and cold things like sugar cane and honey increase water; pears increase wind; rich and oily foods increase earth; and cucumbers serve as conditions for hot illnesses; this is eating unsuitable food. One who eats must distinguish their natures. Once food is eaten and enters the stomach, it dissolves and transforms; the coarse becomes feces and urine, and the refined melts and dissolves, trickling from the three orifices of the waist into the four limbs; the clear transforms into blood, moistening the whole body like dust receiving water. If the body's blood is insufficient, it withers, knots, scorches, and diminishes. The turbid transforms into fat and grease; hence the old faculties diminish and become waste, while new faculties congeal and become flesh.
