Furthermore, one need not exclusively calm the mind at the site of the illness. As the Secret Methods of the Yellow Emperor says: "When the two breaths of heaven and earth intersect, each possesses the five phases: metal, wood, water, fire, and earth, circulating like a ring. Thus metal transforms and water is generated; water flows and wood flourishes; wood moves and fire blazes; fire flames and earth becomes steadfast—this is mutual generation. Fire meets water and loses its light; water encounters earth and does not flow; earth meets wood and suffers swelling and sores; wood encounters metal and is broken and wounded—this is mutual overcoming." As metal overcomes wood, when the lungs are strong and the liver is weak, one should calm the mind in the lungs and draw in white qì; the liver disease will then heal. The remaining four viscera can be understood accordingly. Furthermore, using calming to treat the four great elements: if one calms tightly, it treats water; if one calms loosely, it treats fire; calming at the crown treats earth; calming at the feet treats wind.
