9.12

慈心觀兩屬，若依根本起慈，屬有漏；若依不淨等起慈，屬無漏。慈無地位，約地階級，依根本成眾生緣；依背捨成法緣。

The contemplation of the mind of loving-kindness belongs to both. If loving-kindness arises based on the fundamental, it belongs to the tainted; if loving-kindness arises based on impurity and the like, it belongs to the taintless. Loving-kindness has no stage of its own; its gradation is defined by other stages. Based on the fundamental, it becomes conditioned by sentient beings; based on the [eight] emancipations, it becomes conditioned by dharmas.
