Ninth, explaining the arising of mindfulness of the Buddha: either mindfulness of the Buddha arises and then the various dhyānas arise, or because of the various dhyānas mindfulness of the Buddha arises. While seated in dhyāna, one suddenly contemplates the immeasurable, boundless, and inconceivable merits of the Buddhas, giving rise to profound faith, reverence, shame, and yearning admiration. One visualizes the Buddhas possessing great spiritual power, great wisdom, great blessing and merit, and great marks and signs. Such marks and signs arise from this merit; such marks and signs arise from that merit. Such marks and signs possess this blessing and merit; such marks and signs possess that blessing and merit. One knows the essence of the marks, knows the fruits of the marks, and knows the karmic actions of the marks; illuminating and comprehending each and every Dharma gate clearly, one deeply understands the ocean of marks without doubt or impediment. The settled mind is calm and peaceful, without agitation or distraction; abiding peacefully in this absorption, it gradually deepens, suddenly giving rise to the coarse and fine abide, the desire realm [concentration], the threshold [concentration], and advancing into the first dhyāna and beyond.
