Tenth, to explain the manifestation of supernormal powers: briefly, there are five: the divine eye, reading others' minds, the divine ear, recollection of past lives, and bodily supernormal powers. The uncontaminated belongs to the discussion in the lower realm below. One only attains the manifestation of supernormal powers through dhyāna; one cannot attain the manifestation of dhyāna through supernormal powers. Why is this? The dhyānas are all concentrations, which can mutually manifest one another. The dhyānas are the essence of supernormal powers, and supernormal powers are the functioning of the dhyānas. From the essence comes the functioning; thus, supernormal powers arise by attaching to the essence. Since functioning does not arise in isolation, how could it manifest the essence? A sūtra says: 'Deeply cultivating dhyāna concentration, one attains the five supernormal powers.' This is precisely the meaning.
