9.135

若在禪中染著定相，若出觀已，起慈仁禮義之心；若不失定，隨禪報盡，則生人道。若用禪觀熏於十善，任運自成不加防護，是天業——四禪、四空，上兩界業。若專修根本，但增長人天，永無出期。如大通智勝佛時諸梵自云：「一百八十劫，空過無有佛；三惡道充滿。」了無一人，得出生死。

If within dhyāna one is tainted and attached to the marks of concentration, yet upon emerging from contemplation one generates a mind of loving-kindness, benevolence, propriety, and righteousness, then if concentration is not lost, when the retribution of the dhyāna is exhausted, one is born into the human realm. If one uses dhyāna contemplation to perfume the ten virtues, so that they naturally succeed without adding protection, this is the karma of devas—the karma of the upper two realms of the four dhyānas and four formless realms. If one exclusively cultivates the fundamental dhyānas, one merely increases rebirths as humans and devas, with never a time of escape. Just as at the time of the Buddha Mahābhijñājñānābhibhū, the Brahmā kings themselves said: 'For one hundred and eighty kalpas, time passed in vain without a Buddha; the three evil destinies were completely filled.' Not a single person was able to escape birth and death.
