Third, to clarify the marks of the arising of the various dhyānas: In the case of the pratyutpanna-[samādhi], it also gives rise to the fundamental, but rarely; in constantly sitting [samādhi] and the like, it occurs frequently. For now, let us discuss it in terms of sitting: If the body is upright, the mind collected, and the breath harmonious, and one perceives this mental pathway to be tranquil, clear, and quiet, gently peaceful and stable, gradually entering, with the mind remaining on its object without scattering away, this is called 'coarse abiding.' Following this mind, when it is more gentle and peaceful than before, it is called 'subtle abiding.'
