Dwelling in desire-realm concentration, perhaps for months or years, the concentration dharma sustains the mind without laxity or pain, and not emerging for successive days is also attainable. Following this mind, with a tranquil turn, spacious and open, one no longer sees the head, body, clothing, or bed within desire-realm concentration, like empty space, brightly peaceful and secure. The body is a phenomenal obstacle; phenomenal obstacles hinder the not-yet-arrived [dhyāna]. When the obstacle is gone and the body is empty, the not-yet-arrived can arise; this is called the 'mark of the not-yet-arrived stage.' People without understanding attain this concentration and claim it is the forbearance of the non-arising of dharmas. Since character-obstacles still remain and one has not yet entered the first dhyāna, how could one mistakenly call it non-arising concentration? It is like ashes covering fire; the foolish tread upon it lightly.
