The joy of this dhyāna is agitating and its bliss unsettled; one should reproach joy. When joy subsides, one enters the preparatory stage. Suddenly the third dhyāna manifests, arising together with bliss; this is still the material form becoming increasingly wondrous, without relying on joy to produce bliss. This proper bliss is experienced throughout the entire body; noble ones are able to renounce it, but for ordinary beings renouncing it is difficult. This stage has five factors, namely: equanimity, mindfulness, discernment, bliss, and one-pointedness of mind. In their presentation in sutras and treatises, whether earlier or later, these are merely minor differences in practice.
