9.85

若依特勝、通明發慈定者，所依之定自是一邊；能依之慈附起不濫。此定既有觀慧，慈定亦不隱沒；五支法味倍勝根本。或因慈定而發特勝、通明，此之慈定亦不隱沒，禪味亦深。或因慈定發小、大不淨。

If one gives rise to the concentration of loving-kindness relying on the exceptional [breathing contemplation] or pervasive illumination, the concentration relied upon belongs to one side, while the loving-kindness that relies upon it arises in conjunction without confusion. Since this concentration possesses contemplative wisdom, the concentration of loving-kindness is also non-latent; the Dharma flavor of the five factors is doubly superior to the fundamental. Or, relying on the concentration of loving-kindness, one may give rise to the exceptional or pervasive illumination; this concentration of loving-kindness is also non-latent, and the flavor of meditation is deep. Or, relying on the concentration of loving-kindness, one may give rise to the minor or major [contemplations of] impurity.
