Now that the phenomena of causes and conditions have arisen, we elucidate calming and contemplation on their basis, patterned into the ten intentions (and so forth). As for the conceivable realm: in the past, performing black karma and various unwholesome actions within a mind of ignorance formed the realms of the three evil paths; performing various white karmas and unmoving karma formed the three wholesome realms. If one transforms ignorance into the illumination of arising and ceasing, this is called 'contemplation with lower wisdom', attaining śrāvaka bodhi. Transforming contaminated actions into supramundane actions that assist the path, seven kinds of learners who have residual karma not yet exhausted are still born into the wholesome realms. If the non-learners use uncontaminated karma and cling to the ultimate truth, craving combines with fundamental ignorance, and they are born into the land of expedients, receiving name-and-form there, and arouse grasping and becoming through craving and anger toward that—this is the śrāvaka realm. If one overturns ignorance into the illumination of neither arising nor ceasing, this is middling wisdom, attaining pratyekabuddha bodhi. The Qing Guanyin jing says: 'Contemplating the twelve links of dependent origination as like a dream, an illusion, or a plantain tree, one accomplishes the pratyekabuddha path.' The intention lies in this. Transforming contaminated actions into uncontaminated assistance to the path, whether fettering karma is exhausted or not exhausted is the same as before; this is the pratyekabuddha realm. If one transforms ignorance into prajñā and transforms unwholesome actions into the five perfections, because genuine [insight] has not yet arisen, one still possesses the twelve links of dependent origination within the three realms; this is the six-perfections realm. If one transforms ignorance into empty wisdom and transforms actions into the six perfections, prior to the sixth and seventh stages the severing of delusions is not yet exhausted, all being the same as before. When severing is exhausted they are born there, their merit and wisdom being slightly superior; this is called 'contemplation with middling wisdom', attaining the bodhi of the shared teaching. If one transforms ignorance into sequential illumination and transforms actions into discrete practices, with the severing in the ten faiths and ten abodes not yet exhausted, while in the ten practices and ten dedications the severing is exhausted, all being the same as before—this is called contemplation with superior wisdom, thereby attaining the bodhi of the distinctive teaching.
