Fourth, in order to penetrate and tear through the great net of all sūtras and treatises, this calming and contemplation is taught. If a person skillfully employs calming and contemplation to contemplate the mind, then inner wisdom will be bright and clear, penetrating the sudden and gradual teachings. Just as breaking open an atom brings forth a scroll of scripture of a great trichiliocosm, the Buddha-dharmas as numerous as the sands of the Ganges are understood in a single mind. If one wishes outwardly to benefit sentient beings by adapting to their capacities and setting forth teachings, one speaks in accordance with what each person is capable of undertaking. Up to the time of attaining Buddhahood and transforming beings, one may expound the sudden and gradual teachings for the Dharma King; or stimulate and evoke them before the representations of the ten dharma realms—bodhisattvas, śrāvakas, devas, māras, humans, and ghosts; or, being questioned by a Buddha, broadly answer regarding the sudden and gradual; or strike the opportunity to question a Buddha, and the Buddha turns the sudden and gradual Dharma wheel in response. This meaning will be broadly explained in the ninth tier; it is also briefly shown in the inclusion of dharmas.
