Furthermore, before the preceding three [modes of] calming and contemplation—teaching, practice, realization, and persons—are integrated, they still do not know the perfect, much less enter the perfect. If the Buddha integrates the purports, opening the gradual to reveal the sudden, all will thoroughly enter. Although they are not immediately sudden, they are gradual-sudden. Therefore the Lotus Sūtra says: "What you are practicing is the bodhisattva path"; "Each rides a jeweled carriage, fulfilling the son's original wish"; "Decisively resolving the śrāvaka Dharma, this is the king of all sūtras." Opening and making penetrable the gradual dharmas, he enables all to gain entry, receiving them by means of the distinctive principle. Therefore, in the Nirvāṇa [Sūtra], attaining the paths and fruits of the two vehicles is not blocked from the perfect and permanent; practicing and training on this basis, all shall become Buddhas. This is entering the perfect from the gradual, and is also called the purport of opening the gradual to reveal the sudden.
