Therefore the Brahmajāla[-sūtra] says: "The precepts are called the Mahāyāna, called the light of the supreme truth, not blue, yellow, red, or white. The precepts are called filial obedience; filial obedience is called accord. Filial obedience is the good of stopping [evil]; accord is the good of performing [good]. Such precepts were recited by my original teacher, and I also recite them thus." One should know that the wondrous contemplation of the middle way is the correct essence of the precepts. It is highest-grade purity, the ultimate upholding of the precepts. The Ten Stages extensively explains: "If there is no self and nothing belonging to a self, far removed from all conceptual proliferations, and all is nonexistent, this is called supreme śīla." Therefore the Vimalakīrti[-nirdeśa] says: "The nature of sin is neither internal, nor external, nor in between the two. As it is with the mind, so it is with the defilement of sin. One who is able to understand thus is called well-liberated, called observing the Vinaya." This is precisely the meaning.
