If even shallow worldly matters do not coalesce without conditions, how much more so the supramundane way? If there were no preliminary lead-in, how could one easily ascend it? Therefore, passing through the twenty-five methods, one takes concrete matters as [the objects of] contemplation, attuning the coarse to enter the subtle, checking the scattered to make it tranquil; hence they are the remote expedients for calming and contemplation. Among these five methods, three categories are drawn from the Da zhidu lun, one from a Meditation Sūtra, and one was established by various meditation masters.
