There are two schools that explain this: one says that cultivation through conditions reveals cultivation of the real; the second says that when cultivation through conditions ceases, the real manifests of itself. 'The real manifesting of itself' is arising from self; 'revealed through conditions' is arising from other; 'the real and conditions united' is arising from both; 'apart from the real and conditions' is arising without a cause. Seeking wisdom through the four propositions is unobtainable, nor can one obtain non-wisdom. Why is this? Relative to wisdom one speaks of non-wisdom; because wisdom is absent, there is nothing relative to which it can be posited, and therefore non-wisdom is also absent. If one clings to the real or to conditions as correct, one cannot disclose the middle; both are hindrances to wisdom. If one does not cling, these are the four gateways. If one succeeds in tallying with the principle, the principle is neither the real, nor conditions, nor both, nor apart from them, and cannot be explained or indicated.
