Furthermore, regarding the defiled factors of the path: twenty-two in the desire realm, thirty-six in the threshold state [prior to dhyāna], and thirty-seven in the first dhyāna are all defiled factors of the path, like milk; the factors of the path of the Tripiṭaka are like curd; the factors of the path of the shared teaching are like raw butter; those of the distinctive teaching are like cooked butter; those of the perfect teaching are like ghee. The text and meaning of the Mahāparinirvāṇa-sūtra accord with this; it is not that outside of the factors of the path there are separate aiding dharmas. Some say that the thirty-seven factors are aiding paths; some say they are the direct path. The Mahāprajñāpāramitopadeśa says, “They are the bodhisattva path.” This text resembles [the view that they are] the direct [path]. The Vimalakīrtinirdeśa says, “The factors of the path are the good friends through which one achieves correct awakening.” This text resembles [the view that they are] aiding.
